Abstract

EMDR therapists who wish to deepen their understanding and application of EEDI principles within their clinical practice to improve therapy outcomes. By integrating an awareness of unconscious and implicit biases throughout the 8-Stage EMDR Protocol, therapists can provide an equitable and inclusive therapeutic practice, thereby enhancing treatment effectiveness and client care.  Understand the types and impacts of unconscious and implicit biases in psychotherapy, particularly in EMDR.  Apply strategies for self-reflection and bias awareness to enhance therapy effectiveness.  Implement EEDI principles throughout the EMDR protocol to create a more inclusive, equitable, and unbiased therapeutic environment.

Aims

1.    Equip Therapists with Bias Awareness: Through improved understanding of biases during client history collection (Phase 1) and preparation (Phase 2), therapists will be better prepared to ensure equitable therapy from the start.

2.    Develop Bias Mitigation Strategies: Skills to tackle biases in the preparation stage (Phase 2), and enhanced awareness during assessment, desensitisation, installation, and body scan (Phases 3-6), aim to maintain an unbiased therapeutic alliance.

3.    Create an Inclusive Therapy Environment: Learning strategies to minimise biases during session closure (Phase 7) and re-evaluation (Phase 8), strengthens EMDR therapy’s effectiveness by fostering an inclusive and empathetic space.
