Abstract
This workshop is for therapists who want to consider ways to make that their practice more trauma-sensitive and trauma-responsive across the different EMDR phases. It is underpinned by qualitative research carried out with survivors of sexual violence (Beddows, 2022) and will explore the specific aspects of therapy through which blame, disrespect, and other negative messages can be unintentionally communicated to clients who have experienced interpersonal traumas.
Aims
1). To gain a more expansive understanding of victim blame and the ways it can be communicated to and experienced by clients who have survived sexual violence (Phase 1: establishing working relationship, history taking, treatment plan conceptualisation).
2). To understand the ways that victim blame can be inadvertently communicated within therapy, especially considering structural inequalities and the intersectionalities of client and practitioner identities (Phase 2: preparation, therapeutic alliance).
3). To consider specific aspects of EMDR practice through a trauma-informed and trauma-responsive lens (Phase 3-8: effective
Bio Presenter
Amy is a CBT therapist (BABCP Accredited) who also practices EMDR and DBT. She works in Higher Education counselling services and private practice, primarily with survivors of sexual violence and abuse. She has a PhD in women’s experiences of victim blame from agencies, obtained at the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit (CWASU) at London Metropolitan University. In addition to therapy, she is a supervisor, trainer, and independent consultant in the field violence against women. She lives and works in Edinburgh.
